Michelin® X One® Frequently Asked Questions

What's holding you back?

  • 1. What happens if there's a tire failure?

Michelin has completed extensive vehicle handling/stability testing under rapid air loss conditions on a wide range of vehicle configurations. We have found no adverse handling or sudden change in directional stability. See for yourself.

    Rapid Air Loss Techniques
Extensive testing has shown that a rapid air loss on an X One® tire will not compromise the stability and behavior of the vehicle. However, with one tire on each axle end, the loss of air pressure will allow the wheel and axle end to drop and possibly contact the road service.

    • Do Not try to "limp home" or continue to run on a flat tire
    • Do down shift or use the trailer brake (when appropriate) to avoid tire/wheel assembly lock-up
    • Do release the brakes intermittently as you slow down to allow some rotation of the assembly

FAILURE TO DO SO MAY CAUSE IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO THE TIRE, WHEEL, AXLE COMPONENTS AND VEHICLE.

Even though new trucks are now required to be equipped with ABS brakes, a lock up could still occur. The ABS system, which would normally prevent brake lock, does not necessarily have sensors on all wheel positions. For more information about the availability of ABS sensors on all wheel positions for the X One® equipped tractors and trailers, consult your vehicle manufacturer.

    Pressure Maintenance
Drivers have commented that an under-inflated X One® tire is more likely to be detected with a simple visual inspection than duals. However, pressure is difficult to gauge visually even for the most experienced driver.

    • Do Use a properly calibrated gauge when verifying the air pressure of an X One® tire
    • Do Not rely on the appearance of the tire
    • Do Remove and inspect any tire found to be 20% below the recommended air pressure
    • Failure to do so may cause tire failure
  • 2. What about X One® tire availability on the road?

“The biggest fear … [is] the possibilities of over the road failures. … Michelin has solved that issue with a two hour guarantee to have a tire to you to get you up and going. … Every Michelin dealer has to stock at least one of these tires. I did four mock breakdowns in the South East in rural areas to see what would happen. … The longest time I found it would take to get a tire out to my truck was an hour and a half.” -Chris Emrich, Southeast Regional Maintenance Manager

  • 4. What about retrofit compatibility?

The Michelin X One® tire was designed with the same loaded radius as current duals.

    • 275/80R22.5 can be replaced by the 445/50R22.5
    • 11R22.5 can be replaced by the 455/55R22.5
    • 275/80R24.5 can be replaced by the 455/55R22.5

The Michelin X One® tire requires the use of a 14” wheel. 14.00X22.5 wheels are currently available with various mounting (stud piloted or hub piloted), various offset (0” or 2”) and various surface finishes.

Some axle and hub manufacturers have recently clarified and confirmed their position concerning the use of 2” offset wheels with their respective components.

  • 5. What about stability?

    Michelin® X One® dual vehicle stability

Vehicle stability is a function of its track and the height of its center of gravity.

    X One® Vehicle Stability

The overall width (sidewall to sidewall) is reduced with X One.

    • However the use of the 2" offset wheel extends the track.
    • A wider track improves stability.
    • Wider inner sidewall distance could also allow manufacturers to move the suspensions support outward to improve frame stiffness.

    Just Ask Our Customers

“… there is … near unanimous endorsement among our drivers. The X One's are noted for improved ride, superior handling and the drivers are particularly keen regarding the ease of handling the highway dollies…” -Steve Erwin, Fleet Manager
     Clinton's Ditch

“The drivers were a little hesitant, but once they drove the tractor-trailer they loved the ride, handling, and the improved traction versus the dual and the other wide base tires we have tested.” -Matt Hein
     Tri Hi Transportation

    Vehicle Handling
Drivers have commented that the wide, stable footprint of the X One® tire can provide the feel of a much more stable truck compared to traditional dual tires. However, while most X One® fitments allow the track of the trailer to be widened, the vehicle’s behavior in curves (on ramps or off ramps) is still subject to roll-over at excessive speeds.

    • Do not let the outstanding handling of the X One® tires give you a false sense of stability in curves.
    • Do respect all posted speed limits regardless of tire fitments.

FAILURE TO DO SO MAY CAUSE VEHICLES TO TIP.

  • 6. What about retreading?

Michelin X One® tires are retreadable just like any radial truck tire. InfinicoilTM Technology ensures zero casing growth and better crown endurance. Michelin Retread Technologies offer “like new” tread designs and compound to help maintain second life performance. Other retread processes also offer alternatives for X One® tire retreading.
